On Saturday, September 22 twenty high school marching bands from Minnesota, Iowa and South Dakota met in Waseca for the 31st annual Waseca Marching Classic. The Lakeville Marching Cougars participated in the parade competition in the afternoon and the evening field show competition. The Marching Cougars, under the direction of drum majors Haley Greig, Belle Cucci and Aleks Lockman earned the highest combined point total of the day earning them the Richard “Butch” Dufault Sweepstakes, the final award given at the competition!
The band performed Locked Out of Heaven and What I Like About You during the parade and their field show is entitled “The Six Pillars of Character.” The field show takes the audience on a musical journey through what it takes to build a person of strong character; Trustworthiness, Responsibility, Fairness, Citizenship and Respect. The band has traditionally constructed shows around developing strong character in their student musicians such as their 2016 show benefiting the American Cancer Society.
The band’s goal is to “Beat South!” The students work to perform a more musical and cleaner show than those that came before them. This year’s marching band did just that; the Marching Cougars beat their 2017 parade and field show score. The band will continue to improve their performance for the homecoming football game on Friday, October 12, and their final competition at the US Bank Stadium on October 13.
The band will cap their successful marching season with an indoor marching band concert on October 27. In the last 7 months they have performed at Lakeville South, around Minnesota, and in Dublin , Ireland. The band’s accomplishments include the Spirit of the Parade Award in Dublin, first place in music and second place overall during their State Fair performance day, and the Overall Sweepstakes Champion in Waseca. More importantly, they have made hundreds of thousands of people smile and dance by performing with Cougar Passion and Pride!
