The Lakeville South Marching Cougars tied for third place in the class A Minnesota State Championships in downtown Minneapolis on Saturday, October 13th at the U.S. Bank Stadium! The Youth In Music Marching Band Championships featured 29 high school bandsĀ from 6am to 11pm.
After warming up outdoors in the Commons Park in windy 40 degree weather, the Lakeville South Marching Cougars marched their Six Pillars of Character show into the stadium for thousands of fans. The student’s accomplishment of receiving third place out of nine class A bands is truly remarkable especially considering this was their first appearance at the Youth In Music Marching Band Championships.
YIM included many great performances by the 29 bands and approximately 4000 student performers. An estimated 7,000 fans were in attendance with 100 charter buses and semi-trailers parked outside to transport the students, equipment and props. Lakeville South senior, Emily Lloyd was honored as one of two class A recipients to receive a scholarship on Saturday.
Congratulations to all of the Lakeville South Marching Cougars for a great season and peak performance at the State Marching Band Championships! Band directors Nick Castonguay and Chad Bieniek want to thank all of the outgoing seniors for their outstanding achievements and leadership in taking the band to the state championships for the first time in Lakeville’s history. They also wanted to thank the many parent volunteers for the countless hours outfitting the band, creating props, moving equipment, working through logistics of moving 150 students and feeding all of them! The band boosters also purchased a new set of used uniforms from a drum corp in Georgia. They mended them, bought more hats and added sashes to match the colors of character in the show.
It takes a community to build success! Our parent volunteers were integral, but community donors and businesses contributed to the musicians’ success. The friends of the Lakeville Arts Center donated 2 new band trailers, Big Ink donated the wrap of the trailers and printed the group’s props; Cub Foods, Hi-Vee and Subway all made donations to keeping the band hydrated and fed. In addition Sam Scheffler built the pillar props which framed in the band’s performance as an eagle scout project. LSHS Bands are so thankful to all their donors and supporters, it really does take a community to build successful programs for our students to grow in.
